Global Technology Context

The Global Technology (GT) team at Marriott Vacations Worldwide (MVW) is on a multi-year journey to modernize technical and digital products and platforms across all business lines. This role demands a visionary leader with a technical understanding of the range of resort operations technical products in solving complex business challenges. Proven success as a leader in recruiting, developing, and retaining technical talent on high performing teams is required. The incumbent is a proven thought leader, a consensus builder, and an integrator of people, processes, and technology. 

Specific Job Summary

The AS400 Engineering Manager is responsible for the design and implementation of applications and enhancements that support the Interval International business unit of Marriott Vacations Worldwide (MVW).  Collaborates with MVW’s Global Technology (GT) functional teams to design, promote, and deliver innovative solutions using various AS400 technologies. Collaborates with vendors and managed service provider (MSP) partners for projects and processes. Provides level 3 incident and service request support. Guides level 1 and level 2 associates and MSP representatives.

  • Contributes to team, department and/or business results by performing complex quantitative and qualitative analysis for business processes and/or projects. Often manages small projects, business processes or parts of larger ones.
  • Responds to, solves, and makes decisions on more complex/non-routine business requests with limited to moderate risk.
  • Assists more senior associates in achieving business results by:
    • identifying opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of business processes.
    • participating in setting department operating plans.
    • achieving results against budget within scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of personal strengths and areas for improvement and acts independently to improve and increase skills and knowledge.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate.

Specific Expected Contributions

  • Partners with Business Analysts and Architects to understand the desired new features or business capabilities needed.
  • Translates business requirements and architectural direction documents into technical solution documents and diagrams that contribute to an overall bid package. Technical solution documents and diagrams serve as the blueprint of what will be developed (coded) by the supplier.
  • Works with others to review/develop supplier bids and proposed work orders.
  • Reviews technical designs from the supplier or develops solution engineering documents as needed.
  • Provides oversight and approval of supplier developed designs and test plans.
  • Works closely with Project Delivery roles to establish overall project management measures and delivery requirements.
  • Reviews supplier work product to ensure alignment to approved design specifications and ensure that delivered solution aligns to MVW policy and MVW Application Development best practices.
  • As needed, provides advanced support (level 3) during production incidents to reduce the outage. Shares knowledge with Supplier to allow Supplier to resolve future issues independently.
  • Contributes to MVW Best Practices Library by creating or enhancing standards.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate.

Successful candidates should possess knowledge, experience and demonstrate leadership skills as follows:

Generally, a professional position with specific knowledge in a discipline (e.g., Accounting, Human Resources, Information Resources). College degree and/or relevant experience typically required.

Specific Candidate Profile

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related discipline or equivalent work experience.

Certifications Preferred

  • ITIL v3 or v4 Foundation Certification
  • AS400 related certifications

Experience

  • 7-9 years of design and delivery of AS400 solutions within business organizations across multiple product lines, multiple countries, and jurisdictions.
  • Progressive experience with designing, delivering enterprise scale AS400 applications.
  • Experiencing using applications such as Softlanding Turnover Change Management System and Atlassian Jira software.

    • Familiar with the full software development lifecycle.
    • Experience in designing and writing code using AS/400 Programming languages, including RPG IV, RPG Free, CL, and DDS.
    • Security and Compliance: Understanding of security protocols and compliance requirements related to AS400 application development.
    • Design, develop, and enhance software solutions using AS/400 programming languages, including RPG IV, RPG Free, CL, and DDS (include subfile processing).
    • Experience in ILE development including the use of Modules, Procedures, Service Programs and Binding Directories
    • Experience using and developing Intermediate to Advanced SQL statement and using Embedded SQL with RPG programs. 
    • Proficiency in debugging and troubleshooting AS/400 applications to identify and resolve issues effectively.
    • Write efficient and well-structured code to implement business logic and functionality on the AS/400 platform.
    • Perform unit testing and debugging to ensure the quality and reliability of developed applications.
    • Troubleshooting and Support: Strong problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve issues related to AS400 applications.

    • Requirement Analysis: Skills in gathering and analyzing business requirements to tailor AS400 solutions to meet organizational needs.
    • Planning and Execution: Ability to plan, execute, and deliver AS400 solutions, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget while meeting technical and quality requirements.

    • Communication: Proven verbal and written communication skills to convey technical concepts etc. non-technical stakeholders in easy-to-understand ways.
